This is a living document. I've been to Japan many times and I keep going back. Along the way I've collected recommendations for restaurants, bars, coffee shops, ramen joints, and shopping spots that I genuinely love.

People started asking me for the list, so I made it into something shareable. Every recommendation here is a place I've personally been to and would go back to.

The * symbol means a reservation is required or highly recommended. Most reservations go through TableCheck, some through Omakase, fewer through Instagram, and some may require booking through your hotel's concierge.
